On a cab ride that starts in Toronto and ends at Pearson you pay the lower of two numbers: what the meter shows, or the City's flat fare to the airport. The rule is for a street-hailed or cab-stand trip that starts in Toronto and ends at Pearson, you may pay the lower of the Appendix C flat fare or the metered fare checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Toronto Municipal Code Ch. 546, and the driver's side of it is the driver must give you a copy of the airport flat-fee map and offer you the corresponding fare when you ask for a trip to Pearson checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Toronto Municipal Code Ch. 546. This page is about getting to the airport from Toronto, Scarborough, Brampton or Hamilton by city cab or by app; it is one of all ways to get to and from Toronto Pearson.

The way back is priced differently: taxis and limos at the Arrivals curb charge a GTAA flat rate by zone, not the City meter — see how the flat rate works on the way back from the airport. Payment differs too. In a city cab, an additional fee may be charged for the use of a debit or credit card checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Toronto Municipal Code Ch. 546; at the airport curb, drivers are not permitted to charge extra for credit-card payment checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA tariff sheet. One regular put the city-side maths this way: "Meter fare would usually be cheaper than the flat rates charged by the airport specific companies." (user report, Reddit, 2023)

From the city: meter or flat

Which of three calculations applies depends on how you got the cab.

1. Street hail or cab stand: the meter. A cab you flag down or take from a stand must charge the City-regulated meter rate. The 2026 tariff, from Appendix A of the by-law:

Meter itemRate
Starting charge (first 0.143 km, fuel surcharge included)$4.25 ($3.25 for the first 0.143 km plus the $1.00 fuel surcharge per trip)
Each further 0.143 km$0.25 for each additional 0.143 km
Waiting time while engaged$0.25 for each 29 seconds of waiting time
Fifth and each further passenger$2.00 for each passenger over four
Children with an adultchildren 8 and under ride free, over 8 and under 12 pay half fare, when in the charge of an adult

The starting charge is $4.25 ($3.25 for the first 0.143 km plus the $1.00 fuel surcharge per trip) checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Toronto Municipal Code Ch. 546; the other rows come from the same tariff table in Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 546, checked the same day. Wheelchairs, including loading and unloading by the driver, are carried at no charge.

2. The City flat fare to Pearson — and the "lower of" rule. The by-law (§ 546-20 C) reads: "When a taxicab trip originates within Toronto, excluding the area bounded by Kipling Avenue on the east, Finch Avenue on the north, Eglinton Avenue on the south, and the western boundary of Toronto, and terminates at Lester B. Pearson International Airport, and the passenger has hailed the taxicab or commenced their trip at a taxicab stand, the passenger may elect to pay either the applicable flat fare found in Appendix C, Taxi Tariffs to Lester B. Pearson International Airport or the fare calculated by the trip meter at the tariff, whichever is lower." The flat values themselves: not captured: the City publishes a flat-fee map for trips from Toronto to Pearson (Appendix C of Chapter 546), but the values are image-only and have not been captured — ask the driver for the map official value not captured as of 26 Sept 2026 · Toronto Municipal Code Ch. 546, Appendix C. Earlier versions of this page quoted a single flat figure for downtown to Pearson; it has been removed because the City map values are not verified. What to do instead: say "Pearson" when you get in, ask for the flat-fee map (§ 546-98 E obliges the driver to give you a copy and offer that fare), and compare the figure for your zone with the meter when you arrive. Two limits: no "lower of" election in the pocket next to the airport bounded by Kipling, Finch, Eglinton and the western city limit, and none on trips that start outside Toronto.

3. Booked through a brokerage app. street hails and cab stands must charge the City-regulated meter rate; a brokerage may discount, and may set a surge price only for rides booked through an app that you accept before the trip starts checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: City of Toronto. A discount is possible; so is a higher price on a busy morning, but only if you accept it before the trip starts, with a detailed receipt. For a destination more than five kilometres beyond Toronto, driver and passenger may agree a flat fare before setting off, with the meter still running (§ 546-20 A).

From Brampton, Mississauga, Hamilton or anywhere else outside Toronto, the City by-law does not apply. Ask the local licensed company for its airport rate before you book; the return leg is on the GTAA flat-rate table by destination.

Licensed city cab?

Toronto cabs have no set colour, so the check is by licence, not paint. The City's own summary: every licensed Toronto taxicab has a roof light and a phone number on the roof sign; a roof light alone does not prove a licence; you have the right to a free ride if the meter is not turned on and may be asked for a fare deposit of up to $25 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: City of Toronto. What that means at the curb:

  • Roof light on means available, off means taken; the City adds, "A roof light alone does not mean that a taxicab is licensed."
  • The roof sign carries a phone number — the brokerage's, or the driver's own. Call it first for lost property or a complaint; failing that, 311.
  • A licensed cab must take the first person who asks, "no matter how small the fare or short the distance," must carry anyone with a disability or a service animal, and must take the shortest route unless you ask for another.
  • The meter must be on for the whole trip; if it is not, the ride is free.
  • Winter: all vehicles-for-hire must have snow or all-weather tyres from 1 December to 30 April checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: City of Toronto.

At the airport the check is different: cabs allowed to load at the Arrivals curb carry a GTAA plate and window decal, and charge a flat rate — see how to tell a licensed airport taxi from a tout.

Paying and tipping

Whether a card costs extra depends on where you got the car.

Some GTAA-approved pre-arranged operators publish that you pay in the vehicle by tap, chip or cash; check the operator's own terms.

Three rules that hold across all three rows. Ask about a card fee before the meter starts, not at the terminal curb; a driver who names one up front is following the tariff note, and you can decline the ride. Tipping is a custom, not a rule: neither the City by-law nor GTAA sets an amount, and 10–15% is what guides and users commonly cite for a driver who loads luggage. One rider's view: "If you're unwilling to tip you should say so before you get in the car." (user report, Reddit, 2022). Keep the trip on the record: a meter or app receipt is what you show if the fare is wrong or a bag is left behind. When an app driver proposed cancelling and taking cash instead, the rider who declined put it simply: "I want the ride to be tracked." (user report, Reddit, 2025) — off-app cash means no trip record and, by that thread's reasoning, no ride-share insurance if something happens.

Getting to Pearson by Uber

Uber's own page lists past-month averages from Toronto to the airport: UberX CA$44–45 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber, Comfort CA$57–60, UberXL CA$76–78, Wait & Save CA$43 — "not fixed or guaranteed prices" in Uber's words; the app quote on your morning is the one that counts. The drop-off point is Departures Level curb of your terminal; the driver may not wait at the curb after drop-off checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber / Lyft. On fees: not published: the airport pickup fee is included in the app price, but neither GTAA, Uber nor Lyft publishes the amount official value not captured as of 26 Sept 2026 · GTAA / Uber / Lyft; Uber lists "tolls and city fees" among the things that move an airport fare, and whether a fee applies to a drop-off is not stated either. The City also sets a minimum fare for app rides. For an early flight, Uber's own advice: "Reserving in advance is the best way to help ensure that you'll have a ride to the airport." The details — which level the driver stops on, what the quote includes, Reserve's terms — are on taking an Uber to Pearson: drop-off level and what the fare includes.

By user reports, 4 am is where the choice gets real. Riders in threads from 2023 to 2026 describe city cab companies asking for a scheduled booking at that hour, with larger cars the weak point: "I've been told by Uber and cab cos they can't guarantee a van/suv at that hour." (user report, Reddit, 2023). Opinions on the apps at that hour diverge, and Uber itself says driver supply may vary; one rider's trip was uneventful: "It cost me ~$41 to get to Pearson from Scarborough at 4am via Uber." (user report, Reddit, 2026). If a car at 4 am matters more than the last few dollars, the options are a scheduled ride with a city brokerage, Uber Reserve (up to 90 days ahead checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber) or a limo or airport-taxi company's published pre-booked rate — none of which is a recommendation of one operator, and none of which the sources guarantee.

Drop-off at the terminal

Tell the driver the terminal and the airline, and expect a brief stop on the Departures level.
