Uber, Lyft and Hopp do not pick up from the taxi curb. They pick up from assigned zones: at Terminal 1 on the ground level, one floor below Arrivals, outside doors P to S; at Terminal 3 on the Arrivals level, outside doors B and D. Your zone, and at Terminal 1 your bay, is assigned in the app once the ride is confirmed — GTAA's instruction is "Check the app for your pickup location." One warning: Uber's and Lyft's driver pages still describe the old points (Door Q, posts P3–Q1). If your driver argues, the GTAA signs and the pin in your app are right.
This page is about finding the car and what to do when it does not come. Whether an Uber beats the train or a flat-rate taxi is answered in how an Uber to downtown compares with the UP Express and a flat-rate taxi; on cost, the short version is that the airport fee is built into the app price and the amount is not published. "Why can't drivers find the pickup point (door Q) at Toronto Pearson?" (user report, Reddit, 2024 — before the March 2026 change) is the thread this page answers; the answer moved in 2026. Jump to Terminal 1, Terminal 3 or Uber Black and Lyft Lux.
Terminal 1 pickup
At Terminal 1 you go down, not out.
- Level: Ground — one floor below Arrivals, by the bus bays. Uber's driver page agrees: "Follow signs for Ground (not Arrivals)".
- Doors, zones and bay: Ground Level (one floor below Arrivals), curb outside doors P–S: Zone 3 (doors P–Q) Lyft and Hopp; Zones 4 and 5 (doors Q–S) Uber, with a bay assigned in the app — since 2 March 2026 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA
- Source: GTAA notice on Terminal 1 ride-share zones and the GTAA ride-sharing page.
The order that avoids a cancelled ride:
- Bags and customs first, then request — Lyft's rider FAQ: "Request your ride once you have your bags in-hand and you've cleared customs (if needed)."
- Go down to Ground and follow the "Ride App Pickup" signs.
- Walk to the doors for your provider's zone — Lyft and Hopp share one, Uber has two.
- Read the bay number in the app; the driver is sent to the same bay.
- Do not wait on Arrivals. That is the mistake behind most "the driver keeps looping" reports.
"You go down a level. Below arrivals. Where the bus pickup area is." (user report, Reddit, 2023 — before the March 2026 change). "If the app says ground level, do not stay on arrivals; go one level down." (blog, 2026).
Drift: Uber's driver page still lists "Terminal 1: Ground Level, Door Q (Inner Curb)" and Lyft's "inner curb between posts P3 through Q1", both captured 26 September 2026. GTAA's allocation is newer and matches the curb signs; follow the pin. Whether bay assignment works smoothly in practice we cannot say — there are no user reports from after the change. Layout: Terminal 1 ground level and doors P–S on the airport map.
Terminal 3 pickup
At Terminal 3 you stay on Arrivals; at Terminal 1 you go down. Not sure where you landed? Check which terminal your airline uses first.
- Level: Arrivals — the level you walk out on after customs.
- Doors and zones: Arrivals Level, curb outside doors B and D: Zone 2 Lyft and Hopp; Zone 3 Uber, Lyft and Hopp; Zones 4, 5 and 6 Uber — since 1 June 2026 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA
- Zone: "Check your rideshare app for your pickup zone." The zone numbers are marked on the curb.
- Source: GTAA notice on Terminal 3 ride-share zones.
Three steps: bags and customs, then request; walk out on Arrivals and follow the ride-app signs to doors B and D; match the zone in the app to the number on the curb.
Older instructions still online: Uber's driver page says "Terminal 3: Arrivals Level, Zone 3 (Outer Curb). Follow signs for Car Rentals (not Arrivals)"; Lyft's says "outer curb between posts C14 through C30". Both predate June 2026; if a driver quotes one, give them the zone number your app shows. We have no user reports on Terminal 3 pickups, so GTAA's description is the only one we can offer.
Uber Black and Lyft Lux
Uber Black and Lyft Lux skip the zones. They pick up at Door A, Arrivals Level, at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA. Here Uber's driver page and GTAA agree — "Black and SUV pickups: Terminal 1: Arrivals Level, Door A (Inner Curb)" — so there is no drift.
- It is the same door as pre-booked taxis and limos: Door A, Arrivals Level — pre-arranged desk inside the terminal, at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA. If you can see the pre-arranged desk, you are in the right place; the taxi and limo rank is on the same Arrivals curb.
- Booked Black or Premier through Uber Reserve? The waiting allowance after landing is longer than for UberX — see Reserve and scheduled rides.
Driver circling or cancelled
"Your driver is 5 minutes away Your driver is 3 minutes away Your driver is 3 minutes away Your driver is 3 minutes away Your driver is 4 minutes away Your driver is 12 minutes away Ride cancelled" (user report, Reddit, 2024). The mechanism behind that screen, from both sides.
Verified: airport drivers wait in a queue, not on the curb. Uber's driver page puts the UberX and XL waiting lot "at Jetliner Rd and Silver Dart Dr"; Lyft's driver rules describe a staging area with a place in line — "Passenger cancellations don't affect your place in line. If your passenger cancels on you, head back to the staging area. As long as you're back within 15 minutes, you'll be placed at the front of the queue." — and add: "Do not wait or circle back at the airport if the passenger is delayed when picking up." Interpretation, by reports from riders and drivers: after a long wait in the lot, a short, low-value trip may be worth less to the driver than a return to the queue — "wanting to go in the never ending queue for 4 to 5 hours just to get a ping going to Toronto for $14." (driver report, Reddit, 2025). That explains what you may see; it is not a statement about how Uber or Lyft operate. The other big cause is simpler: you and the driver are on different levels.
| What you see | Likely cause | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Car icon loops the terminal, ETA jumps | You are on Arrivals and the driver is on Ground (Terminal 1), or at the wrong doors | Re-read level, doors and bay in the app; call or message in the app with the exact spot: "Door R, Zone 5, bay number" |
| "Ride cancelled" after minutes of "3 minutes away" | Driver dropped a short trip, or could not find you | Request again from the correct zone. Lyft's rules return a driver to the front of the queue after a passenger cancels; Uber publishes no equivalent |
| Driver is at the terminal but the pin is across the airport | You requested from the wrong terminal | A 2026 travel blog's advice, not a platform rule: "cancel promptly and rebook at the correct terminal"; a cancellation fee may apply |
| Long "finding your ride" late at night | Fewer drivers in the queue | Uber: "driver supply may vary depending on when you land". Users disagree — "Uber at that time is no problem, other than you might wait 10 min or more for someone to accept and arrive." (user report, Reddit, 2026) against "I panicked and booked Lyft." (user report, Reddit, 2023) |
| 15 minutes with nothing moving, or a second cancellation | The app is not fixing it tonight | Switch to Plan B |
Safety line, from Uber's YYZ page: "For your safety, do not accept trips from outside the app." A driver who suggests cancelling and paying cash is asking you to give up the tracked, insured ride you ordered; decline and rebook.
What an Uber costs
Uber publishes past-month averages for YYZ–Toronto and adds that they "do not represent fixed or guaranteed prices". A benchmark, not a quote.
| Ride option | Past-month average (Uber) |
|---|---|
| UberX | CA$44–45 |
| Comfort | CA$57–60 |
| UberXL | CA$76–78 |
| UberXXL | CA$87–90 |
| Share | CA$34–39 |
| Wait & Save (to the airport) | CA$43 |
The trip behind those averages is about 28–29 minutes and 24 km, CA$42–44 on average checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber; the table values share that check date and source. Three things decide whether your fare lands near the average:
- The airport fee: not published: the airport pickup fee is included in the app price, but neither GTAA, Uber nor Lyft publishes the amount official value not captured as of 26 Sept 2026 · GTAA / Uber / Lyft. Lyft's general help text only says the fee "is collected when you are picked up from or dropped off at an airport" and appears on the receipt.
- What moves the price, in Uber's words: "the type of ride you request, the estimated length and duration of the trip, tolls and city fees, and current demand for rides." Demand pricing applies to every app; the flat-rate taxis and limos at Arrivals have no surge pricing — the flat rate does not change with traffic, weather or time of day checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA.
- Luggage: UberX usually holds 2 suitcases, UberXL about 3; Lyft recommends XL or Black SUV for 3 or more suitcases — luggage space is not guaranteed checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber / Lyft. "I have two big suit cases with me and uber will charge me 100 dollars haha, not trying to spend that much." (user report, Reddit, 2026) — the worry there was the price, not the boot.
To Union Station: UberX averages the figure above, the GTAA taxi flat rate is $70 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA fare estimator, the limo flat rate $77 checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA fare estimator, the UP Express $12.35 one way ($24.70 return) checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: UP Express. The full comparison to downtown by time of day and group size is on its own page.
Reserve and scheduled rides
Both apps let you book before you land, which matters most for a 4 a.m. return, when Uber itself says "Reserving in advance is the best way to help ensure that you'll have a ride to the airport." The published terms:
| Term | Uber Reserve | Lyft scheduled ride |
|---|---|---|
| How far ahead | up to 90 days ahead | up to 90 days ahead, with the price and pickup time locked in |
| Wait after landing before late fees | 45 minutes after your flight's arrival for UberX, Comfort and XL; 60 minutes for Black, Black SUV, Premier and Premier SUV | not published for Pearson; a per-minute wait fee starts "2 min after your driver arrives at pickup" |
| Free cancellation | free cancellation up to 60 minutes before the reservation pickup time | free cancellation or edit up to 1 hour before pickup |
| If the driver is late | no published promise | up to $100 in ride credit if the driver is more than 10 minutes late — Lyft's promise, on Lyft's terms |
| Car seats | drivers are not guaranteed to have car seats; riders may bring their own | not addressed on Lyft's YYZ page |
Every value was checked on 26 September 2026 against the Uber and Lyft rider pages for YYZ. Two things the terms do not give you: a guarantee the car arrives — for late-night flights Uber says "there may be longer driver arrival times" — and a car seat; how car seats work with a pre-booked transfer covers the alternative. Experience is split: "Uber and Lyft are great - I've taken them at that time and had no issues." (user report, Reddit, 2022) against the rider above who booked a second app after ten minutes.
Plan B
Plan B is the licensed taxi and limo line: no surge, no cancellation screen. When to switch, as criteria rather than a rule: 15 minutes without the car icon moving, a second cancellation, a late-night queue producing no match, or an upfront price above the taxi flat rate.
- Terminal 1: back up to Arrivals. Taxis: Door D, Arrivals Level checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA. Limos: Door C, Arrivals Level checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA.
- Terminal 3: you are already on Arrivals. Taxis: Door E (GTAA taxis page) or Doors D, E and F (GTAA accessibility page), Arrivals Level checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA. Limos: Door E (GTAA taxis page) or Door F (GTAA accessibility page), Arrivals Level checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: GTAA. Look for the taxi roof signs.
- What you get: a GTAA flat rate, card accepted without surcharge, a vehicle with a GTAA plate. The taxi and limo line at Arrivals as your fallback when the app fails has the fare table and queue mechanics.
The trade-off, from the rider whose cancellation screen opened this page: "Yeah I ended up canceling my ride and took a taxi instead today. Ended up $30 more expensive but no wait." (user report, Reddit, 2024). If neither suits, see other ways to leave Pearson if ride-share isn't working.
Drop-off by app
Going to the airport is simpler: Departures Level curb of your terminal; the driver may not wait at the curb after drop-off checked on 26 Sept 2026 · source: Uber / Lyft. Uber's driver page: "Riders can be dropped off at their requested terminal on the Departures level"; Lyft's: "Drop off passengers curbside at the terminal entrance, at your passenger's carrier of choice." Give the driver your airline, not just the terminal. The driver cannot wait — Uber warns them that "Idling at the curb may result in a citation from airport authorities". For an accessible drop-off post, see where to drop off at Pearson, including the accessible posts.
On price: Lyft says an airport fee can apply to drop-offs as well as pickups; the amount is not published.
