Arrive at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and three hours before an international or US-bound flight at Toronto Pearson. The flow is simple: check in and drop your bags, clear CATSA security, then walk to your gate. Passengers heading to the United States also clear US preclearance inside the terminal before boarding, which is why US flights need the extra time. Here is the full process, how early to arrive, and how to reach the airport.

Live Toronto Pearson departures board

Check your flight's status, gate, and terminal on the live board below. Confirm it against your airline's app on the day you fly, since gates can change late. If the board shows a delay, you still have to clear security at the normal time, so do not let a later gate time tempt you to leave home late.

The YYZ departures process, step by step

  1. Check in online or at a kiosk, then drop checked bags at your airline's counter.
  2. Clear CATSA security screening with your boarding pass and ID ready.
  3. US-bound passengers only: clear US Customs and Border Protection preclearance.
  4. Walk to your gate and board.

How early should I arrive?

Toronto Pearson and the airlines recommend the following minimums. Add time during summer, holidays, and the morning and evening peaks.

Flight typeArrive before departure
Domestic90 minutes
International3 hours
United States3 hours (includes US preclearance)

A live wait-time dashboard shows current security and customs queues, so you can judge the day rather than guess.

Check-in and which terminal

Confirm your terminal before you set out. Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners depart from Terminal 1; WestJet and most other carriers leave from Terminal 3, and there is no Terminal 2. Our guide to which terminal each airline uses lists carriers one by one, and the terminals guide maps each building. Arriving at the wrong one is rarely fatal, since the free LINK Train connects T1 and T3, but it costs you time you would rather spend airside.

Security and YYZ Express

CATSA runs the security checkpoints. To skip most of the line, book a free YYZ Express security slot up to 72 hours ahead. The program runs 5:00 to 21:00 at Terminal 1 and 6:00 to 22:00 at Terminal 3. Either way, have liquids and electronics out and your boarding pass open before you reach the belt.

US preclearance at Toronto Pearson

Flying to the United States? You clear US Customs and Border Protection in Toronto, not on landing in the States. That adds a checkpoint after CATSA, where you show your passport and answer the usual entry questions. It is the reason the three-hour window matters for US flights, and the reason a tight connection from an inbound international flight to a US departure can be stressful. Have your US documents ready before you join the line.

What is airside

Once you are through security, both terminals have lounges, sit-down and grab-and-go dining, duty-free and shops, currency exchange, and quiet and prayer rooms. Arrive early enough and the wait becomes time to eat or work rather than a sprint to the gate.

Tips for a smooth departure

  • Check in online the night before and have your mobile boarding pass saved offline.
  • Book a YYZ Express slot if you are flying in a peak window; it is free and saves the longest queue.
  • For US flights, treat three hours as the floor, not a cushion.
  • Confirm your terminal so your ride drops you at the right departures level.
  • Glance at the live wait-time dashboard before you leave to gauge security and customs.
