Within about 25 minutes of Toronto Pearson (YYZ) you can shop a 360-store mall, try Canada's largest casino, walk a Lake Ontario shoreline, or tour a hand-carved marble temple, all without fighting your way downtown. This guide covers what sits close to the airport in Mississauga and Etobicoke, for travelers on a layover or an overnight at an airport hotel. Drive times, prices, and hours below were checked in July 2026 against each venue's official site.

What can you do near Pearson without going downtown?

Plenty, and most of it is free to enter. The airport sits in Mississauga, with Etobicoke next door, so a short taxi, rideshare, or rental drive reaches a mega-mall, a casino resort, a temple, or the Lake Ontario shore. Downtown Toronto runs 25 to 45 minutes each way in traffic, and the spots below skip that round trip, which matters when you have only a few hours. The rule is simple: with under four hours between flights, stay near the airport; save downtown for a layover of six hours or more, covered in our downtown things-to-do guide.

Which attractions are closest to the airport?

The two closest sit within a 10-minute drive, both in Etobicoke. Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, at the Woodbine site on Rexdale Boulevard, is the newest and largest casino in Canada, with roughly 328,000 square feet of gaming, about 4,800 slot machines, 145 table games, several restaurants, and live horse racing next door at Woodbine Racetrack. Entry is free, the gaming floor runs around the clock, and a 400-room hotel opened on site in 2026. A few minutes away on Claireville Drive, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple hand-carved from Italian marble and Turkish limestone, free to all visitors from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with a Heritage Museum and free guided tours. One tip: many older airport guides still call the casino "Woodbine Casino," but it rebranded, so search the current name to find hours and events.

Where can you shop near Toronto Pearson?

Three malls sit within a 20-minute drive, all free to enter. Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke is the closest at about 12 to 15 minutes via Highway 427 and the QEW, an upscale center with Holt Renfrew, designer brands, and a food hall that is quick in and out. Square One in Mississauga City Centre, about 20 minutes away, is one of Canada's largest malls, with more than 360 stores and a Food District of local vendors. Right beside it, Playdium is a large indoor entertainment complex with arcade games, VR, racing simulators, and bumper cars, priced per game or by wristband, which suits families breaking up a long travel day. Pick Sherway when time is tight; pick Square One and Playdium when you have a spare afternoon.

Is there anything to do outdoors near the airport?

Yes, and it costs nothing. The Lake Ontario shoreline in south Mississauga is about 20 to 25 minutes away. Port Credit is a walkable harbor village with cafes, a marina, and a lighthouse, and the nearby Rattray Marsh Conservation Area and Lakefront Promenade Park have boardwalks and shoreline trails that are a good way to reset after a long flight. This is the quiet alternative to a mall or casino floor, with no ticket needed. If the weather turns, Sherway Gardens or Square One are the indoor fallback.

What can you do based on how much time you have?

Match the stop to your window, and count round-trip drive time plus your airport buffer before you commit.

If you have under four hours between flights, do not leave the airport area at all.

How do you get around without a car?

Three options cover it. A pre-booked airport transfer is simplest for a fixed round trip to one place. A rental car makes sense when you want to chain two or three stops on your own schedule. Taxi or rideshare is fine for the closest venues. For downtown only, the train beats any road option, and our UP Express guide has fares and timing. If you are staying overnight, many airport hotels run free shuttles and sit within minutes of these attractions.

How long before your flight should you head back?

Keep a hard buffer: be back at Pearson about three hours before an international departure and two hours before a domestic or U.S. flight, on top of the drive. Traffic on Highway 427 and the 401 can double a 20-minute trip at rush hour, so leave earlier than the map suggests. If your bags are not checked through to your final stop, add time to re-check them. When a stop is tight, choose one of the two 10-minute options rather than risk the mall run. Our layover guide has the full in-terminal backup plan for the hours you stay airside.

How we checked

We measured drive times from Terminal 1 using off-peak routing in July 2026 and confirmed hours, admission, and addresses against each venue's official site: Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto at Woodbine, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Etobicoke, Square One and Sherway Gardens, and the City of Mississauga pages for Port Credit and Rattray Marsh. Casino gaming space and room counts come from the operator's 2026 figures. Prices and hours change, so confirm the day you travel.
