Niagara Falls is the most popular day trip in southern Ontario, and many visitors head straight there after landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The Falls lie about 130 km (80 miles) south of the airport, which works out to roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by car or around 2 hours by bus, depending on traffic and connections. No single non-stop public route leaves from the airport itself, so the best choice comes down to your budget, your luggage and whether you are travelling solo or as a group. Here is how every option compares.

Quick comparison

Driving or renting a car

Driving is the fastest and most flexible option. From Pearson you follow Highway 427 south to the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) and continue around the western end of Lake Ontario to Niagara, a toll-free route of about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 in normal traffic. A car also lets you stop at Niagara-on-the-Lake, the wine route or attractions further afield, and paid parking is plentiful near the Falls. Compare rates on our Toronto Airport car rentals page.

Public transport with GO Transit

GO Transit, Ontario's regional network, is the dependable public-transport choice. No bus runs straight from the terminal, so you usually take a short connection and then a GO bus toward the Niagara region. Tapping a PRESTO card keeps the fare to roughly C$18–20, well below the cash price, and the whole journey takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. In summer the network also runs a popular weekend train service to Niagara Falls from downtown's Union Station. Our Toronto Airport train guide explains how GO connects to the airport.

UP Express plus an intercity coach

The cheapest fares come from intercity coaches such as Megabus and FlixBus. The catch is that they depart from downtown Toronto (the Union Station Bus Terminal) rather than the airport. A neat workaround is the UP Express train, which links Pearson to Union Station in about 25 minutes; from there a coach to Niagara Falls can cost as little as C$10–25 and takes around 1 hour 40 to 2 hours. Combined, it is often the lowest-cost way to reach the Falls if your schedule is flexible. Our Toronto Airport to Union Station guide covers the UP Express in full.

Private transfers, shuttles and limos

For door-to-door comfort, a pre-booked private transfer or shuttle meets you at the terminal and takes you straight to your Niagara hotel. It is the least stressful option with luggage or a group, and frequently good value once the fixed price is split between several people. Organised day tours

If you would rather not plan the logistics, many operators run round-trip day tours from Toronto that bundle transport with a Falls boat cruise and sometimes a winery or Niagara-on-the-Lake stop. Most depart from downtown, so pair one with the UP Express from the airport, or simply start the tour the day after you arrive.

Getting around once you reach the Falls

At Niagara Falls, the WEGO bus network links the main sights, from the Horseshoe Falls viewing areas and Clifton Hill to the Niagara Parkway attractions and the major hotels, so you rarely need a car once you are there. Most of the headline experiences, including the boat tour to the base of the Falls, sit within walking distance of one another along the Niagara Parkway.
